Biology 1 - Unit 2 - Topic 9 - Development of a Baby

 Development of a Baby

Once an egg is fertilized, the Zygote moves from the fallopian tubes to the uterus.  It divides again and again to implant into the mother´s uterus.

At which time, the mother has become pregnant. The implanted zygote is now an embryo which continues to grow until it becomes a fetus. The uterus will cushion and protect the fetus while it grows.

The baby receives nourishment through the placenta (an organ that forms on the wall of the uterus) connected to the fetus by the umbilical cord to carry oxygen and nutrients while removing waste products.

A zygote is the initial cell formed when two gamete cells are joined.

After the gestation period, the result is the birth of a baby.

Babies are born through a process called childbirth.  They travel down the birth canal through the vagina into their bright new world.

Stages of labor:

 - The birth begins with frequen contractions of the uterine muscle.
- Then, the lower part of the uterus opens and ends with the delivery of the baby.
