How to use: Although, Though, Even Though, In Spite of and Despite in English.

 


ALTHOUGH / THOUGH / EVEN THOUGH

Meaning: They all mean "aunque" and introduce a contrast between two ideas. However:

  • "Even though" is the strongest.
  • "Although" is formal.
  • "Though" is informal and can be used at the end of a sentence.

Examples:

🔹 Although she was tired, she finished her homework.
(Aunque estaba cansada, terminó su tarea.)

🔹 Though he tried hard, he didn’t pass the exam.
(Aunque se esforzó mucho, no aprobó el examen.)

🔹 Even though it was raining, they went for a walk.
(Aunque estaba lloviendo, salieron a caminar.)

🔹 He is very smart. He didn’t pass the test, though.
(Es muy inteligente. Sin embargo, no pasó el examen.)

Useful Expressions:

✅ Although/Even though/Though I was late, I managed to arrive before the meeting started.

2. IN SPITE OF / DESPITE

Meaning: They both mean "a pesar de", and are followed by a noun, a pronoun, or a verb in -ing form.

Examples:

🔹 In spite of the traffic, we arrived on time.
(A pesar del tráfico, llegamos a tiempo.)

🔹 Despite his illness, he went to work.
(A pesar de su enfermedad, fue a trabajar.)

🔹 In spite of being rich, he is not happy.
(A pesar de ser rico, no es feliz.)

🔹 Despite the rain, they continued playing.
(A pesar de la lluvia, siguieron jugando.)

"Even though" is considered the strongest contrast expression among although, though, and even though because it emphasizes a surprising or unexpected result.

Even though highlights a bigger contrast between two ideas.

It suggests that the second action is even more surprising or unexpected given the first statement.

No Possibility or Hypothesis

Unlike although and though, even though refers to real, factual situations, not hypothetical ones.
You cannot use even though for imaginary or possible situations.

Examples to Compare

✅ Although he was sick, he went to work. (He was sick, but he still worked.)

✅ Though he was sick, he went to work. (Similar to "although" but more informal.)

✅ Even though he was sick, he went to work. (This sounds much stronger, emphasizing how surprising it is that he worked despite being sick.)

Key Rule:

If you want to show a strong or unexpected contrast, use "even though."

If you want a neutral or softer contrast, use "although" or "though."
