The cottage was unusually quiet that morning. Emma, Jareth, and Guardian huddled near the window, listening carefully. Somewhere deep in the forest, they could hear the echoing clicks and hisses of Arachnis. She was still searching for them.
“We can’t stay here much longer,”
Jareth whispered. “She knows this place.”
As if the forest itself had heard
him, a powerful gust of wind rushed through the clearing. The trees bent and
shimmered, and suddenly the sky above the cottage rippled like water. From
within the swirling light emerged a magnificent creature.
It was a dragon!
Its scales glowed in shades of blue
and silver, and its wings sparkled as if dusted with stars. It circled the
cottage once before landing gently, lowering its head toward Emma and Jareth.
Its golden eyes were kind and wise.
Guardian barked, but not in fear.
His tail wagged wildly.
“A World Dragon,” Emma breathed. She
remembered the drawing from the book. “It travels between magical worlds.”
The dragon bowed its head, and a
warm voice echoed in their minds:
“Climb on. The forest grants you a
pause—not an escape, but a breath.”
Without hesitation, Emma and Jareth
climbed onto the dragon’s back, Guardian nestled safely between them. With one
powerful leap, the dragon soared into the sky, leaving the spider’s dark webs
far behind.
They flew through glowing portals,
over floating islands and shimmering skies, until the world slowly shifted into
something familiar. Streets appeared. Buildings. Laughter.
The dragon landed quietly behind a
school.
“Our school?” Jareth said in
disbelief.
The dragon nodded. “You will not
stay forever. But you must remember who you are—children, not only heroes.”
Emma smiled as students hurried past
them, laughing, talking, living normal lives. For a little while, they were
just teenagers again walking the halls, sharing secrets, feeling light and
free.
Guardian trotted beside them
proudly, disguised by the magic so no one questioned him.
In the classroom, one teacher
watched them closely! Ms. Elowen. Her eyes sparkled with recognition as she
noticed the old book in Emma’s backpack.
After class, she gently stopped
them.
“You brought the forest with you,”
she said softly.
Emma and Jareth froze.
Ms. Elowen smiled. “Don’t worry.
I’ve been waiting for you.”
She opened the backpack, and
suddenly something fluttered inside. Out flew the magical butterfly,
glowing softly, its wings pulsing with familiar light.
“It followed you,” the teacher
explained. “Hidden in the book. It always does.”
“The butterfly is a guide,” Emma
said. “It started everything.”
“And it will help you return,” Ms.
Elowen replied. “But remember…joy, friendship, and courage are magic too. Never
forget how it feels to be young.”
The butterfly hovered between Emma
and Jareth, then settled gently on the book’s cover.
That afternoon, as the final bell
rang, the dragon returned—silent, patient, glowing at the edge of the world.
Emma looked at Jareth. “Ready?”
He nodded. “Always. Together.”
With Guardian beside them and the
butterfly leading the way, they climbed onto the dragon’s back once
more—carrying laughter, courage, and the certainty that no matter where they
traveled, the magic lived within them.
And somewhere deep in the forest,
the cottage waited.
