Biology 1- Unit 2 - Topic 7 - Fertilization

 Fertilization

Fertilization of a sperm with an ovule in the ovulation period.

Fertilization also called conception or fecundation is the union of sperm and egg in sexual reproduction.

At intervals of about 28 days, the ovaries in an adult woman release an ovule which pases through the fallopian tube into the uterus.  This phase is the ovulation period.  In this transit, it meets with sperm.  If one sperm penetrates the ovule, fertilization occurs.

Occasionally, the ovary liberates two or more ovules; if more that one becomes fertilized, the result may be multiple births, such as twins.

Pregnancy

The life of an embryo begins when one out of millions of male´s sperm fuses with a woman´s ovule.

A woman´s body is designed to carry a baby while it grows and develops.

This state is called pregnancy. When a woman is pregnant, she carries one (or more) babies inside the uterus, also called womb.  The growth period in pregnancy is called gestation.
